A great war-date Confederate Nitre and Mining Bureau document, signed by Secretary of War James A. Seddon, 1p. 4to. pre-printed by the War Department, Richmond, Va., April 16, 1863 contracting "Messes. Lewis Crawford & Co., of the "Mt. Vernon Furnace" to produce iron for the Confederacy. The document declares, in part: "…that in consideration of this fact and in order to secure the uninterrupted persecution of their work they are promised…facilities for transportation over the public Rail Roads and Canals as the government can afford…". Approved by Secretary of War JAMES A. SEDDON (1815-1880) and countersigned by Quartermaster J. M. St. John as Major & Superintendent. The Mt.
