A nice Grant's Overland Campaign letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by the Barnard brothers of Patrick County, Va., who both served in Co. K, 50th Virginia Vols. The letter begins by James W. Barnard, (1844-1923) [POW Spotslvania C. H., May 12, 1864 confined Point Lookout and Elmira. Exchanged 11/15/64], "Camp near Orange C. H., Mar. 29, 1864", in part: "…we are both well & greatly hoping these lines will reach you enjoying good health…they have stopped furloughing entirely…we are expecting a big fite at anytime…this may be the last line that you ever may read from under my hand…I hope that our maker will spair our lives till we can see each other again in peace when we will not be in dread of the field of battle or the long line of march…we received the things that you sent us buy Henry Webb [POW Spotslvania C. H., May 12, 1864] an[d] the letter…it said something about E. M's boys wat they was doing. Tell Tirea that I what him to [?] whip there little corn stealing backs…and tell them part of it was for me and if I cold of bin thare at preaching I should of whipped somebody sure…your loving brother and son till death, J. W. Barnard." ... plus, Then Jehu (1840-1933) [POW Spotslvania C. H., May 12, 1864 confined Point Lookout and Elmira. Oath of Allegiance, 6/27/65], in part: "…we have just come off our picket yesterday…the campaign will soon commence for our generals have begun reviewing their men and that is assure sign. General Grant is commanding the Yankee troops down here. I recon he is aiming to take Richmond but…he will run against a snag if crossing the Rapidan river…Jehu Barnard." The original stamped (tied by bold Army of Northern Virginia field cancel) transmittal cover is included. The first six lines of the letter are very light, else VG.
