Manuscript Document Signed “Henry Bryan - Maj. & Insp. Genl,”, 4pp., Montgomery Ala., Nov. 30, 1864, 4pp., neatly penned as draft with corrections. Its subject is the reorganization of the Confederate Cavalry to include Nathan Bedford Forrest's and General Joseph Wheeler's commands. In large part, “The great moral wants in the cavalry service are 1st discipline, 2nd good field company officer and 3rd effective organization- the whole three being intimately connected. ...I would respectively recommend that the following as a minimum. Divisions commanded by Major Generals of three brigades, brigades command by Brigadier Generals of 3 to 4 regiments & battalions regiments of 8 to 11 companies & battalions (of old soldiers only) of 4 to 6 companies and companies of not less than 40 armed bearing men -- proceeding as follows- 1st Select the most efficient brigades with commanders whose courage & capacity have been tested & are generally known to the troops-Make these the skeletons to receive the regiments and battalions of brigades less effectively commanded.- 2nd Consolidate or reduce regiments and battalions, that is combine two or more regiments together or by consolidating companies reduce a regiment of 10 cos ( ? ) to a batten of 6 cos, or in very rare cases 4 cos- Or if it be peculiarly desirable break up a regiment and distribute the companies into other regiments, consolidating the companies of the disbanded regiment with such companies of the preserved regiment as will be most likely to give satisfaction to the men.
