A great ca. 1930 archive of United Daughters of the Confederacy documents and letters and medal from the United Daughters of the Confederacy Emily Graham Chapter of Chester County, South Carolina. Included in the group is a large (14 1/2" X 17 3/4") pre-printed diploma style "CHILDREN of the CONFEDERACY" certificate naming sixteen new members of that post signed by President-General Elizabeth B. Barhomsky (?) at Houston, Texas on May 30, 1931…PLUS; second are two drafts of letters of nomination which, of course, are decidedly pro-Southern in tone and read, in small part: "It gives me peculiar pleasure in the name of the U. D. C. chapter to welcome you…it is 73 yrs…since the star of the Confederacy set forever at Appomattox. Many of the actors in her tragedy have passed…it is…fitting that our organization…should assemble to formulate plans to honor the memory of those who followed Lee & Jackson…"…PLUS; two copies of a speech given in 1929 regarding the role the organizations is to play in keeping the memory of their ancestors alive. Both are two pages in length, on 4to. size letter sheets and reads, in part: "…this year 1929 finds the organization…passing the thirty fifth milestone of its career…the United Daughters of the Confederacy was organized in Nashville, Tenn. by Mrs. C. M. Goodlet, September 10, 1894. The purpose of this organization was to preserve the true history of the Confederacy and keep in sacred memory the brave deeds of the men of the South…"…PLUS; another speech, 5pp. 4to., entitled: "Of What Use is the U. D. C.?" Which mentions the organization's efforts in having a monument erected at Vicksburg to honor the fallen who died during the siege of that city during the war…PLUS; a 2pp. 4to., list of achievements reached by the organization up to that time…PLUS; two manuscript lists (plus one type written copy) of the muster rolls for Companies A & E of the 3rd South Carolina Volunteers listing each members name and rank. FINALLY, there is a period United Daughters of the Confederacy bronze membership medal, pin back, with a small silk tassel attached. Overall of great archive of the Southern heritage! Overall expected wear, else VG.
