War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., in patriotic "Remember Ellsworth" stationery, written by Pvt. William Jasper McKnight, Co. B, 37th Indiana Vols., Camp Haycraft, Elizabethtown, Hardin Co., Kentucky, Nov. 22, 1861, in part: "…we left Camp Holemen on the 15th for this point. We are 24 miles south of West Point…this is a strong Sesesh place but they have to keep mute. They is three regiments here. The 27th Indiana, 18th Ohio, 19th Illinois. We are getting a strong force in Kentucky. McCook is in 9 miles of us. He has between 15 and 20 thousand. They is no regular Sesesh army nearer than 50 or 60 miles. Buckner they say he had only 20 or 25 thousand…we may stay here some time…most of the sickness is caused by the measles…their was one man died yesterday [most likely William T. Hannah]. He was berried accordant to the honors of war. We have tolerable hard grub…we get beef 2 days in a week, pork the balance…W. J. McKnight…Camp Haycraft, Harden Co., Kentucky. 37th reg. Ind. Vol., Co.
