War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Wallace McGrath, Co. K, 15th Ohio Vols., Camp Wood, [Munfordsville, Kentucky], Dec. 15, [1861], in part: "…we are now in a very pleasant place near Munfordsville on the Green River. It is a great deal more healthy here…the people say that Camp Nevin was the most unhealthy spot in all Kentucky. This place is the greatest place for curiosities in the shape of stones…we are only about 20 miles from the Great Mamouth Cave…there are a great many caves all around here…myself and another young man went into a cave about 400 hundred feet into the ground and explored it all over…your friend, Wall. address me in care of Genl. R. W. Johnson, 6th Brigade, Camp Wood, Ky." The original transmittal cover is included. VG
