War-date Union officer's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by 2nd Lt. Wallace McGrath, Co. K, 15th Ohio Vols., "Hd. Qurs. 1st Brigade, [n. p., but Murfreesboro, Tenn.], April 25, 1863," in part: "…our brigade has been to the front not very far though, not over six miles from Murfreesboro. We were ordered out to cover a movement on McMinnville…we only had one or two light skirmishes on the Shelbyville Pike, but the forces that went to McMinnville had quite a fight and whipped the Rebels and destroyed quite an amount of commissary stores…our forces burned in McMinnville one of the largest flourishing mills in the Southern States…the inimitable "Genl. John Morgan" ran away from there and left his wife. [Morgan married Martha "Mattie" Ready on Dec. 14, 1862 at Murfreesboro.] She was taken prisoner but I do not know what they have done with her…we are ready at any time to advance or to fight if the Rebs advance on us…the Rebels will get whipped worse…than they were at Stone River. This army was never in a better condition than it is now…for a fight. We all have great confidence in our commander Rosecrans. He is great on issuing orders but he always has his orders executed which makes his orders valuable. I am glad…that you will cast your vote next fall for the army. Every good loyal man should do it…every man who is true to his country and his God will do what he can to uphold the President in every measure…to put down this accursed Rebellion…no man is a loyal man who does not, but he is a damned cowardly butternut…W. McGrath A. D. C." Near fine.
