A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. John W. Towle [WIA Second Bull Run, 8/29/62], Co. B, 6th New Hampshire Vols., "Before Fredericksburg, Va., Nov. 24, [1862], to his brother William C. Towle who served in the 23rd and 12th Maine Vols., in part: "…we have been encamped here several days…the rebs are just across the Rappahannock from us-our pickets being on this side and theirs on the other. We can talk together the the river not being very wide and a good deal of black guarding is carried on between some of them. There is no firing between them although so near together…we go to the river and wash our clothes and they do the same. One of them told me that he was sick of this war and he didn't care which side whipped so long as he got home…such an army as are now in the field ought not to rest until this rebellion is crushed and I don't think it will. Our regiment is in the first brigade, second division, ninth Army Corps. The Brigade is commanded by Brig. Gen. Nagle and the division by Gen. Sturgis…the Corps is commanded by Gen. Sumner together with another Corps. Gen. Burnside formerly commanded this corps but now has command of the whole army of the Potomac. His headquarters are but a short distance from here so that we shall be directly under his eye…some of the citizens give the boys a dollar and a half a pound for coffee which is very scarce with them…John Towle." he original transmittal cover is included.
