War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by a member of the 96th New York Vols., Camp Suffolk, Va., Nov. 2, 1862, in part: "…they went to the Balckwater to fight. They left here about 3 PM Thursday and marched all the way there that night. They took 8 regts. of infantry, one of cavalry and a battery of 6 guns. The artillery opened fire on the rebels…but the rebs did not reply only with 2 guns…they could not find anything to fighting they commenced a countermarch back again…the Regt was all worn out but they plundered awfully. They shot twice as many hogs as they could fetch away. They would skin out a hind quarter and leave the rest for [the] Secesh. They would sometimes take every chicken, hen and turkeys, geese and [in] fact everything they wanted. Sometimes they would have 6 or 8 hives of honey tipped down at a time. The bees would sting but they would not mind it. When Pastor [Nathan] Wardner's nigger went I told him to go in some old Secesh house and if he could see a bake kettle to take it…he went into a house and sure enough there was oner with bread in it baking. He took it…he said "In de ashes whent Old (??)…I would not take five dollars for it…your husband." VG.
