A very unique letter, written on a 4” x 17” ledger sheet from the Confederate Post Office, October 24, 1862, Fort Vicksburg, Memphis Tennessee. The writer is Almon Rogers who on 2/17/1862 mustered into "A" Co. OH 72nd Infantry and was Mustered Out on 2/15/1865 at Columbus, OH. In part, “It is the report today that they first brigade of division under the command of Gen. Smith had a fight with the rebels at Germantown fifteen miles east of here but we have no heard the particulars. I went up the river a few days ago there was about one hundred men of our Regt. and about thirty artillery men and three pieces of artillery we went to look after some guerillas that had been firing at boats coming down the river at island number 21 we did not find the guerillas we saw the tracks where they had left with their artillery we burnt some old houses and took a few hogs and chickens and started back we stopped a little lower down for the boat to take in wood and we found where some of the guerillas had stayed the night before. We found one man asleep near a corn field. We took him prisoner and another one that kept a post office this paper is some that we found there. ....”
