A Union officer’s letter written and signed by John Frederick Pierson who on 5/27/1861 he was commissioned into "H" Co. NY 1st Infantry and was Mustered Out on 5/25/1863 at New York, NY. he was captured during the Seven Days’ battle and exchanged 9/21/1862 Aiken's Landing, VA. The 2pp., letter is datelined Hd. Qrs. 1st Regt. N.Y., Camp near Edwards Ferry, Md., Oct. 13, 1862. In part, “The Rebels have taken so much from me that I now dare keep but little nor expect to keep that little long ... We arrived here this AM after 36 miles march. we guard the Ferry at present, but after Stuart from his raid on Chambersburg, has reached Virginia soil safe. ..I shall hear soon the result of the court of inquiry ... I am not aware of any servants of mine, a free man having sold into slavery, for I never owned a free nigger ...”
