War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written, on patriotic (The Flag of Our Union) stationery, by Corp. James Harvey Mitchell, Co. I, 47th Illinois Vols., "Camp Rienzi, [Miss.], July 20, 1862", reading, in part: "…we are still encamped at Rienzi 25 miles south of Corinth. The Rebels are getting saucy around this region…they are going to attack us in our present position…they will meet with a warm reception for we are prepared for them and are well fortified…the War is…on the turning point. If energetic measures are adopted…the war will soon come to an end but if our men continue as they have…I am afraid that the Rebels will get some advantage which will prolong the war. I hope that the Gov. will come down on the Rebels now and show them no mercy that is the only way to bring the war to a successful conclusion. I look with great anxiety for the results of operations before Richmond. If our men succeed in taking that…the war will soon be over…if the Rebels are sharp they will take advantage of our present state and make all their mischief before…30,000 men are equipped and sent into the field for we can fight them once more on equal terms. I hope that they will soon be in the fields for we have not men enough men to successfully cope with them for we have to guard every little town that we take…the Rebels feel around to break our lines but I think that our Genls. are wide awake. They will not attack us unprepared. I should like to hear from Calvin…there has been terrible at Richmond…that he may have fallen among thousands of other [have] been my fears…this rebellion must be crushed or it renders valueless all our noble country and our pleasant firesides…will lose…I cannot help having some misgivings…as to the length of the war…I think that everything wise and proper will be done by the President…when we finish this war we may have to fight England a round…I think I will try it a horseback next time. I am about tired of…[?] foot wear…you may hear that they're has been a big fight at this point before long…for the Rebels…are advancing upon us but we are ready for them…direct to Co. I, 47th Ill. Rienzi, Miss., Rosecranz Div…Harvey." VG
