War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Corp. James Harvey Mitchell, Co. I, 47th Illinois Vols., "Camp 47th Ill., Oxford, Miss., Dec. 20, 1862," reading, in part: "…I have been detailed away from the Regt…we have the R. R. finished to this place and our supplies come up to this town by R. R. I had the pleasure of seeing Cousin Wm.. He was returning to his Regt…he looked very well…and he said…marching helped him. I went down with him about 3 miles and carried his knapsack & gun for him…. Old Dea. Beard's boy was with him. He looked place…I tried to find their Regt…but I could not….there is some talk of some of Sherman's Div…coming into our Div…the report came here last night that the Rebels had come in our rear and they sent the 1st Brig. of our Div to reinforce them. They have retaken Jackson, Tenn…they will be rather roughly handled before they get through…there has been some severe fighting…around Fredericksburg. I hope they may strike such a blow as will bring the infernal Rebels to terms. I am getting tried of this war…it is about time that it was wound up…J. Harvey Mitchell." VG
