I, 47th Illinois Vols., "Camp near Helena, Ark., Mar. 27, 1863," reading, in part: "…we are now about 6 miles south of Helena and are just opposite the famous Yazoo Pass. I did think that we would go down the pass, but they say that they have given up trying to do anything on the pass, as they have found a better way to get at Vicksburg…I hope we will find some way to take it soon. We are encamped on a narrow strip of land about fifty yards wide between the river and a large bayou…where we are going zI do not know. I hope we will get in the neighborhood of the 77th…D. F. McGowan, Co. I etc, 2nd Brigde, J. E. Smith's Div."
