War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Corp. David F. McGowan, Co. I, 47th Illinois Vols., LaGrange, Tenn., Dec. 15, 1863, reading, in part: "…we are actually going to have a theatre in the Seminary building…they will be ready to commence operations about the last of the week…there are to be four actresses. I may go once just to get a sight of a woman for…they are a scarce article in this benighted land. There are a few in towns. Our Col's wife and a Lt's wife (neither of them very attractive)…are here for a short stay. We had a new flag presented to us yesterday. A present from the children of Peoria. It is quite handsome. There is a good deal of talk about enlisting in the Veteran Corps. I have not made up my mind yet…I want to be satisfied whether my health will permit it. I hope there will be no necessity of our reenlisting…Dave." VG
