War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Corp. David F. McGowan, Co. I, 47th Illinois Vols., LaGrange, Tenn., Dec. 23, 1863, reading, in part: "…Capt. Andrews and me went to the theatre lat night. The plays were just tolerable. There was quite a full house and considerable noise…I did not enjoy it much. The theatre is quite close to our camp. I can hear them now cheering the actors…I have not read the President's message…I have read Pres't Davis' message. It is quite an able document. Speaks quite hopefully of the final independence of the Southern Confederacy…Dave."
