I, 47th Illinois Vols., LaGrange, Tenn., Jan. 15, 1864, reading, in part: "…we are going to evacuate this road I guess. The last train load of troops etc came from Corinth today. I cant inform you where we are going…we will have a pretty rough time…when we get started. We will take no baggage only what we carry on our backs. Our tents are to be turned over when we get to Memphis…father don't want me to re-enlist. I guess maybe I will obey him…Dave." VG
