War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Corp. David F. McGowan, Co. I, 47th Illinois Vols., Memphis, Tenn., July 28, 1864, reading, in part: "…you have heard all about the movements of thee troops on their last march…we have just read the account of Gen. McPherson's death. The country has lost a gallant and useful officer. There are any amount of rumors going the rounds. One to the effect that Hunter was badly whipped. There is a rumor that we will leave here in a day or two…from what I hear, the veterans are skirmishing a little in your neighborhood. How is it? I hope it is in a good cause…there seems to be another big scare in Maryland…Dave. F. M." VG
