War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. large folio, written by Corp. David F. McGowan, Co. I, 47th Illinois Vols., "on steamer New York 100 miles below Cairo, Sept. 25, 1864," reading, in part: "…this boat keeps up such a shaking that it is hard work to keep on the lines…and lastly but not lastly the cabin is crowded…there are about a dozen men and women singing "When I can read my tille clear"…I can hardly realize it…I haven't felt comfortable since we left Memphis…we are traveling on transport without our guns. I don't feel a bit safe…it was reported (when we left Memphis) that Price had taken New Madrid. What a prospect! I want Price to know that all we want is to be let alone…we had an election today on our boat…Linkum 290. MickLellan 15. Fremont 000. Co. I unanimous for Lincoln 37. What do you think of that? Old Abe is the man. Old Abram is the man with a steady mate from Tennessee state. Old Abram is the man…the boys generally were very orderly when we left Memphis. That was chiefly owing to the fact that very few of them have money…they will have a bust in Springfield…wasn't that a glorious victory of Sheridan's. I hope we will soon have another from Grant. A few more such victories will be apt to end this war, or…make Abe's election sure. Did you read Sherman's letter in reply to a petition from the mayor and city council of Atlanta?…it is the best thing I ever read. He would make a right kind of president…I hope all the Copperheads will be drafted…Dave." Minor fold splits, else VG
