War-date Union veteran's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by former Corp. David F. McGowan, Co. I, 47th Illinois Vols., Ellicotts Mills, Md., Dec. 15,1864, reading, in part: "…I find a much greater change here than I anticipated among my former friends…there are hardly any communication between our family and our relations. They are all bitter secesh. One of my cousins (young lady) spent ten days with us since I came home. She is very handsome, very intelligent, and a most inveterate Rebel…she keeps it all to herself while at our house. I like her very much. She is quite lively. I have not called on any of my relations and hardly think I will as it would be very apt to breed a row and I what to avoid that if possible. The society of this place has degenerated considerably since I left here….there is not a friendly feeling existing in our community. Nearly every person seems to live for self alone…there is a few of us who meet together occasionally and have a nice sociable time. Were it not for my parents, I would…live in the Prairie state not that I pine after Minonk. Oh! No! Not by any means…Dave. F. M…".
