Group of fourteen (14) letters by Private Robert Licht of Geneva, New York, to his family, all dated 1918, all with covers and censorship stamps, they read in small part: “...[Oct 11] Somewhere in F. Licing in a shack and are sleeping in real bunks...there are so many rats here that we are sometimes kept awake by them running over us....about the size of a cat...I had a nice German helmet but someone stole it on me...Last night I read that young Roosevelt was killed or captured. I sure am glad that I didnt get into aviation for it sure is dangerous...last night a lot of us fellows gathered in front of our tents and sang...we sure did have some harmony...I just saw several fellows who have been at the front and they told me that they were pushing the Huns back so fast that our big guns couldnt keep up...yesterday General Pershing inspected our division...he gave us a holiday. They can’t beat the 78th...I am now at the front...[Oct. 20] its pretty hard plugging...[Dec. 22] in front of me is the front line trench of the Huns...our camp is between the first and second lines...also there are dug outs of all kinds...the Huns were in this very place for over four years...in some of their ground homes were found pianos while in one was found a bowling alley...last week Friday a Hun came over in a French Aeroplane...he opened fire at two of our observation balloons brinkging two of them down in flames...our machine guns then got a crack at him, and down he came end over end with his machine in flames...” VG.
