War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Robert Henry Greenfield, Co. I, 130th New York Vols., [n. p., but Suffolk, Va.], Oct. 1, 1862, to his wife, in part: "…if I was bern to get shot in the army. So be it….Mite [Pvt. Milon Parker, Co. I, 1st New York Dragoons, DOD Washington 9/10/64 buried Arlington National Cemetery grave 13-8344] is well…he and I are cooks now. It is work for us but Cap. [James] Leeman [WIA Trevillian Station, Va., 6/11/64] is satisfied with our cooking…some of the boys buy pies of the negroes wenches but I would rather starve Mary. I thought I had seen negroes in York state but they don't begin. Nasty, dirty things, unfit to be on the face of the Earth and still we are fighting for them and the Union…tell the boys that if there is not much prospects of drafting, not to enlist for they never can stand that hardships of a soldier. Their are many boys that never will stand it but In think I can Mary. They are all right until they get sick and then it goes hard with them…I must tell you the accident that happened to Henry Youlles [DOD Suffolk, Va., 4/10/63]. He was bringing wood for us to cook with and he fell down and cut off two of his fore fingers on his right hand. He will get his discharge soon and his wife will be glad to see him…Robert Henry Greenfield. The World Over."
