War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Robert Henry Greenfield, Co. I, 130th New York Vols., Suffolk, Va., [Oct.] 14, 1862, to his wife, in part: "…we do not know what hour that we may be called on to fall in line of battle ready for the enemy. There has been some skirmishing out to Black Water…fifteen miles from here between our cavalry and the rebel cavalry. They came across our pickets and took some of our beef cattle, but our cavalry took them back…and drove the rebels across Blackwater. If we have an ambush it will be at Petersburg about seventy five miles from here. We can run up there on the cars for we have possession of the railroad. All through here…the government has laid the track…so that the rebels cars cannot run on the road without laying it all over and…we will never give them the chance until peace is declared…two rebel regiments have laid down their arms and say that they cant fight anymore for they are half starved and almost naked…they say they have to live on half rations…some of our boys think that we have hard living but if they get taken prisoners they will find worse living with the rebels…Robert H. Greenfield…".
