War-date Union soldier's battle letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Robert Henry Greenfield, Co. I, 130th New York Vols., Suffolk, Va., Dec. 8, 1862, to his wife, in part: "…we have moved our camp…the other side of Suffolk…the reason that we moved our camp was it was a low spot and it was unhealthy…we are in another brigade now. One of our own. Kernall [Colonel Alfred] Gibbs has been promoted to brigadier general of our brigade. Thomas Thorp [POW Trevillian Station, Va., 6/11/64 & Bvt. Brig. Gen., 3/13/65] is commanding kernel of our regiment. He is thought a great deal of by this regiment. Sephrences Ward is back to the regiment…he was not taken prisoner…he will not fall out of the ranks next time…Frank Adams [bvt. major 7/6/66] has been promoted to aide de camp of this brigade. I am glad that he got out of our company…some of the boys are down on him. I have nothing against him…Robert H. Greenfield…". VG
