War-date Union soldier's letter, 5pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Robert Henry Greenfield, Co. I, 130th New York Vols., "Camp Suffolk, Va.," Feb. 9, 1863, to his wife, in part: "…J. Mills…was here two months ago but his regiment has gone to North Carolina…he is a good boy and a good soldier…I hope he may live to see home…this awful Rebellion…is causing many a poor father, mother, sisters, brothers and widows and wives to lament and mourn for their dear ones that are dead or dying. Every day are fall on the battle field…many an old gray headed men have I seen since I have been in the army that have come from the dar distant North after the remains of the only son that has been stricken by the hand of death…since our late battle. He was from Portage. His name is Wood. His son[Charles M. Wood] was killed in the late battle [of Deserted House.] Probably you will see a list of it in the papers…his father has come to take his son's poor mangled corpse home…many others have done the same…who is to blame…it must lay on the head leaders…them are only working for big pay not to save the Union…if it was left to the soldiers to settle this war would soon come to a close…when we was in the battle and the Rebel shell came whistling by my head…I thought…if I was born to be shot on a battlefield why so be it. I will try and do my best and so I did…I had some very close calls but as luck would have it I did not get a scratch. One piece of shell struck my gun stock but did not injury of any…two boys from Co. A were struck and killed instantly within six feet of me…Robert H. Greenfield…". VG
