War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Robert Henry Greenfield, Co. I, 130th New York Vols., "Camp Suffolk, Va.," [Apr.] 6, 1863, to his wife, in part: "…the report came in camp…that the Rebels was advancing on Suffolk with forty thousand strong and…they was within eight miles of us at the Deserted farm where we whipped them before…they will have to come and fight us now. We are ready to receive them. We have got 11 forts and seven batteries and one gun boat and rifle pits all around us for four miles…around Suffolk…they cannot get in here without losing a great many men and they have not got them to lose. We have got…upwards of eighty thousand men here…and can soon get more if we want them. Deserters are coming in from Blackwater everyday. They say that they must do something before long or starve and I should think so by the looks of them…I am as tough as any of them…Robert H. Greenfield…". VG
