War-date Union soldier's Suffolk siege letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Robert Henry Greenfield, Co. I, 130th New York Vols., "Camp Suffolk, Va.," Apr. 25, 1863, to his wife, in part: "…our company has not been in camp for eight [of] ten days. We are about one mile from camp on the bank of the Nansemond River. We are laying in our rifle pits. The Rebels are just across the river. Some of them are in sight all of the time…they have got a large force between here and Blackwater. I could hear their brass bands play in different directions last night and see their campfires…our forces had another fight yesterday. Our men drove them and took some of them prisoners. There was 12 killed of our men and twice the number of the Rebels. They have been repulsed every time yet. Our men have taken six pieces of artillery and one hundred and fifty prisoners. They will have a bloody fight before they ever take this place…Robert H. Greenfield." VG
