War-date Union soldier's Suffolk siege letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Robert Henry Greenfield, Co. I, 130th New York Vols., "Camp Suffolk, Va.," Apr. 30, 1863, to his wife, in part: "…I am in hopes that my life will be spared that I may see you once more…I am very sorry that you are worried…but I cannot help it…it does not do any good. You wanted to know how A. J. White was going to send that money…I do not know. He is at Fortress Monroe now in the general hospital and when I gave him the money I told him to keep it until I see him again…I did not know but I should get shot and I did not want the Rebels to get my money. I told him to send it in a letter…if I did not see him again…the Rebels are on three sides…they have tried at three different point to come in but they have been repulsed every time. They never can come in without losing a great many men, three to our one for we have got rifle pits all around Suffolk. Our company has been in the rifle pits ever since the Rebels come in sight. We are on the banks of the Nansemond River in sight of some of the Rebs all of the time. Their pickets and ours talk together every night, but they are getting shy for one of our pickets fired on them after he agreed not to. That I consider mean after they turned to go away. James Randall is here in Suffolk. His regiment is about half mile from our old camp…Robert H. Greenfield." VG
