War-date Union soldier's Suffolk siege letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Robert Henry Greenfield, Co. I, 130th New York Vols., "Camp Suffolk, Va.," May 4, 1863, to his wife, in part: "…the Rebels have disappeared. We had a fight here yesterday and drove the Rebels two miles. There was upwards of one hundred killed and wounded on our side. The Rebel's loss is not known yet. They are retreating towards Petersburg. They left last night at ten…many deserters have come into our lines already. Forces have gone out from Suffolk on all the roads. We are in the rifle pits yet…the Rebels have made up their minds that they cannot take Suffolk. They would never of attacked Suffolk but they supposed that our brigade had gone to North Carolina to reinforce Foster but they got mistaken…the woods is full of dead Rebels that was killed by our shell. They lost a great many men, more than we did…Mite [Pvt. Milon Parker, Co. I, 1st New York Dragoons, DOD Washington 9/10/64 buried Arlington National Cemetery grave 13-8344] is going to write a few lines to Ett…Robert H. Greenfield. Mite's portion, reads, in part: "…the excitement seems to be hear today that the Rebs has give us the slip, but our boys are after them and they just sent in 8 prisoners that had tired out…we are giving them fits…your Cousin, Mite."
