War-date Union soldier's Grant Overland Campaign letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Robert Henry Greenfield, Co. I, 1st New York Dragoons, "Camp on the James River at Wine Oak Landing, Va.," June 25, 1864, to his wife, in part: "…since we was at Malvern Hill. When we was ay White House I started to write…but we had to start on another raid…we have just returned. We are crossing the James River now on transports. The 2nd Division is crossing now. We belong to the 1st Division, 3rd Brig…I expect t get some when we return to the Army of the Potomac…we have had a pretty hard time. We had a hard fight at Trevillian Station. We had a great many killed and wounded. We had five wounded in our company…he is in the ambulance…George is some homesick…don't you say anything about it to anyone for he would not like it…we will have to recruit our horses first for they are pretty well useless. They have been under the saddle every day since we broke winter quarters…we marched sometimes all night and fight all the next day…if George gets…to the hospital…he will get out of some hard fighting…I am writing on the ground under a pine shade tree…Robert H. Greenfield." VG
