War-date Union soldier's battle letter, 2 1/2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Robert Henry Greenfield, Co. I, 1st New York Dragoons, "Camp near Middletown," [Va.], Oct. 26, 1864, to his wife, in part: "…our regiment has been in a hard fight since I wrote to you last…we lost some good boys killed and wounded. Fletcher Walker was killed and Sergeant [Prosper] Swift of our company. Our men had to charge the Reb infantry. Heavy loss on both sides but we drove them and captured fifty pieces of artillery and lots of wagons. It was a hard sight. The next morning I rode over the battlefield. Men and horse lay in all directions, some men with their heads blown off. They fought from daylight until after dark. Monroe Gayheart [George Monroe Gearhart] was also killed…there was many a poor soldier laid wounded all night without any fire. The Rebels left…most of their wounded on the field. I stopped and built fires for some of them that had to lay out all night…it looks hard [and] I [can] take it, but most that I talked with seems to be discouraged and say that they will not fight no more…Robert H. Greenfield." VG
