War-date Union soldier's letter, 5pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Robert Henry Greenfield, Co. I, 1st New York Dragoons, White House Landing, [Va.], March 19, 1865, to his wife, in part: "…you probably take the papers up…and where ever you hear that General Sheridan is you can make up your mind that we are not far from him…this has been the hardest raid of the war. We had to wade rivers up ton our horses sides and sometimes they went in all over rider and all…I have got a trotting nag…that I captured on this last raid. She is a fast one and if nothing happens to her I will bring her home…this war is about to close everything begins to look like it. Every time we meet the Rebels we whip them and now they have commenced arming their slaves and that begins to look like peace…R. H. Greenfield. Mary this is a hard letter…to read…I got it somewhat mixed for one of my horses got loose and I had to go and hitch him…when I went to writing…I commenced on the wrong side of the sheet…".
