War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written, on rare usage of "Liberty and Union Forever. Sheridan's Ride" Magee song sheet stationery, by Pvt. Robert Henry Greenfield, Co. I, 1st New York Dragoons, Petersburg, Va., Apr. 22, 1865, to his wife, in part: "…we have just returned from the place where General Lee surrendered. We are at Petersburg…just outside the city…how long we will stay here I am unable to tell but I think…that the generals are waiting to see if the rest of the Rebel army surrenders or not…if they do I think that the army will come home in a short time…we have seen some hard times but I think our regiment will never see any more fighting…you spoke of the death of Lincoln. Yes we heard of it probably as soon as you did…it is sad news to the army. I for one feel sad and sorry if I did not vote for him. It is a sad thing for any men to be murdered in cool blood in such a manner…if John Wilkes Booth wanted to have revenge why did he not take a gun and go in the Rebel army like a man. He is a poor miserable wretch and should be burned a the stake and all others that uphold him…some of them Rebel sympathizers have got to keep pretty mum when this regiment gets home or they will suffer…Robert H. Greenfield…". Near fine.

Even though A Non Lincoln Supporter He Thinks Booth's Action Unmanly. He Should Have Fought In The Rebel Army If He Wanted Revenge!
