I, 1st New York Dragoons, Petersburg, Va., May 4, 1865, to his wife, in part: "Having just returned from Danville I thought I would write a few lines…we have been on a very hard march…we have two hundred miles…we started for North Carolina but Old Johnson heard that Sheridan was coming to help Sherman and when we get within one days march of him we heard that he had surrendered…then we countermarched for Petersburg. We are going to Richmond and from there Fredericksburg and from there to Washington…there we expect to be mustered out of the service. General Sheridan says he is going to let his men see Richmond. The place that they have fought to get so long…R. H. Greenfield. Near fine.
