War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. William P. Roberts, Co. G, 68th Indiana Vols., [DOD 11/02/62], Lebanon, KY, Sept. 5, 1862, in part: "…we have thrown up breastworks…all around town…I am most keem to fite…we will have to fite them or run and that we we don't do. This is a small place about the size of Brookfield…they are all Secesh here but they cant open their mouths…there was about 600 hundred of us and it was fun. It was cleared off for the battle field…there was one regiment left here for Cincinnati…they say that place is in danger…this is exciting times…I should like for you to see what it takes to keep some 6000 thousands men. They haul it in by the 6 horse loads…there is one half of the boys well…W. P. Roberts, Lebanon, Kentucky, 68th Reg. Ind. Vol…". The original transmittal cover is included. Overall VG.
