War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. William P. Roberts, Co. G, 68th Indiana Vols., [DOD 11/02/62], Lebanon Junction, KY, Sept. 10, 1862, in part: "…we are in camp Haycraft…where the 37th camped last fall. We have moved back 40 miles in the direction of Louisville. We are 30 miles from Louisville. We had marching orders…I was with the wagon train. There was 150 wagons and 1000 cavalry. We marched Saturday and Saturday night…Sunday the rest of the boys…when the railroad bridge was burnt before them by Rebels. Our men got out of the cars and expected to have a battle but could not find any Rebbls. There was about 6000 strong here…they [Rebels] all live round through the country. When we are there they are for the Union and as soon as we are gone they are Seseca…our officers don't look to the welfare of our country…they don't care how long the war lasts…it will never end until this Government is sunk…there has bin no body died yet. I am…sick [?] down on our officers. If they would turn the privates loose this war would soon be over, but [for] now they are getting big pay and the privates are doing the work. This is a poor country…hilly, stony and worn out…we just through down their fence [and] go in the corn fields…go in the barns and take anything. Go rite in the house in the parlor…sleep and eat everything we find….W. P. Roberts, Louisville, Kentucky, 68th Reg. Ind. Vol…". The original transmittal cover is included. Overall VG
