War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. William P. Roberts, Co. G, 68th Indiana Vols., [DOD 11/02/62], Union Junction, KY, Sept. 11, 1862, in part: "…I am out in the woods now on picket. I have bin out all night…we have to carry our water one mile & a 1/2…we get it out of the river where there is about 2000 cavalry washing their horses and their selves. It is to dirty for any white man to live…we have to sit right on the ground in the dirt of all kind and eat…tell Thomas & Isaac just to stay at home. They know nothing about it. We are up half of the nights, all night and cant go…till 9 and get up half past 3…or be put in the guard house…I have not bin their yet…we don't want many close on a march…I took some soap, went to the river, soaped them [his clothes] well and jumped in and swam around…you need not be afraid of me falling in love with any of the women because I have not seen any but negrow wenches…I have not bin within fifty yards of a white woman since I left Indianapolis…it is offal dry here. They cant plow at all…our army waists it. [They] cut down hundreds of acres of corn. There hant one acre of corn within 4 miles…all cut down to keep the Rebels out…they just brake up a man…if he has anything…I feel some like having the rheumatism…my bones aches at this time…tell Thomas be can sell my gun if he can get $20 cash for it if not I want you to take good care of it…Wm.
