War-date Union soldier's letter, 6pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. William P. Roberts, Co. G, 68th Indiana Vols., [DOD 11/02/62], Union Junction, KY, Sept. 14, 1862, in part: "…this is Sunday…but don't look much like it…about two thousand men [are] chopping and falling trees. We have got this place pretty well fortified. We have got rifle pits all around. We are expecting a fite…soon…there is about twenty thousand Rebels at Lebanon…we will give them battle if they attack us but I don't think that we are keen enough to attack them as green as we are. We have not drilled any for better than a week…there is about 6000 men here and about seventy five thousand at Louisville…the bridge is burnt so…they cant do us much good. Our pickets bring in prisoners everyday…they brot in 3 last night. They are hard looking customers. I [thought] that we looked hard enough but they are harder still. There has been several men shot in this camp by pickets. 2 was shot last night, but one shot himself through the hands accidentally and the other shot dead by pickets. There has about 10 men killed in this camp…I should like to now whether you got that $51 dollars bounty from the county…I told Marrow to ay the money…if you cant get it take [the] order [and] get father to tend to it…let me know whether they [are] drafting yet…and whether there is any of them scared. I should like to see some of them drafted…this country is ruined now. This is a poor country, yellow clay and stony…don't look like it would raise beans…sells for about 5 to 10 dollars per acre. I wouldn't have it if they…give it to me as a gift…the Rebels are getting the better of our men at Washington. That is bad news…Wm. P. Roberts, Louisville, Key., 68th Reg. Ind. Vol., Comp. G to follow the Reg". Very minor stains, else VG.
