An unusual pair of war-date Internal Revenue officer's letters, both 4to. totaling 3pp., written by a certain "U. V. Kyger", the first on "Assessor's Office, Internal Revenue, Fourth District, Indiana" stationery, Brookville, Franklin Co., Ind., August 14, 1863 reading, in part: "I have received a certificate from the Treasury Department for the Bounty and back pay due you amounting to some $116…come to my office…and sign receipts so that I can get your money…U. V. Kyger." ... The second Brookville, Dec. 25, 1863, reads, in part: "Your pension was paid up to March 4th 1863 amount $32.52. Your expenses up to this time…is as follows…fee due me for application $5.00…revenue stamps .60…county seal .50, physicians certificate .50 [total due him] $11.10. Leaving a balance due you of $21.42. In future there will be but a very trifling expense. You should come in promptly and apply again in 6 months…when $48 will be due you. U. V. Kyger." As noted in Roberts' letters, also included in this catalog, he enlisted in the 68th Indiana during the summer of 1862 and died of disease on Nov. 2, 1862.
