War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Elijah H. Clark, 69th Indiana Vols., Van Buren Hospital, Irish Bend, La., May 2, [1863], in part: "…I am in a darned old hospital…our regiment is at the Grand Gulf 35 miles below Vicksburg. It has been in a fight…our men…have taken Gaines Bluff…close to where we had that skirmish on the Yazoo river…if they have that town they is gone up but I don't believe it…Elihu H. Clark…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included.
