War-date Union soldier's letter, 2 1/2pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Jesse P. Moren, Co. G, 93rd Ohio Vols., Tullahoma, Tenn., Aug. 3, 1863, in part: "…you conscripts had better shoulder your shafts & go for them d-d butternuts in Eaton…& demolish them. Don't leave one to tell the tale…wipe them into chaos…in church, in public…at home & abroad…for god & your country's sake wipe them out at the ballot box & we will help you all we can. I was pleased to hear of several obnoxious individuals throwing themselves into horizontal positions on the streets…in consequence of having run against stones, brick-bats & sundry other ugly insect…I am neither mobocrat, aristocrat nor democrat…I was pained to hear of the escape of the double murderer Reichard…I hope he will again be arrested &…brought to justice…those low…lick spittals who were instrumental in his escape they are as vile…& with him should dangle on the same gallows…they [should be] elf over the smoldering cinders until every drop of treason is tried out of them & then hurled back in chains…to await the traitors doom. Go for the Copperheads, the slimy filthy…show them nary quarter unless it be a quarter of a brick…I went out in the country yesterday some four miles & found a fine looking feminine gender who put me in mind of some of the female women in the United States…direct to any place this side of Louisville, Ky…give my best respects to your father & tell him we have been hearing too much from the Copperheads…& we look for much from him as we know him to be an ardent supporter of the Constitution…J. P. Moren." VG.
