A great war-date Anti-Copperhead printed, 4pp. 8vo., circular of the INKSTAND…EXTRA, Boston, Feb. 1863, entitled: "Hear The Old Patriot!" being an account of a speech made by a certain Mr. Funk of Illinois who could no long sit idly by while anti-government Copperhead played politics in the Illinois State senate. The speech reads, in very small part: "…in the…Illinois Legislature a great sensation was created by a speech of Mr. Funk, one of the richest farmers in the state…who pays over three thousand dollars per annum taxes toward the support of the government…Funk rose to object to trifling resolutions which were being introduced by the Democrats to kill time and stave off a vote upon the appropriations for the support of the state government…I can sit…no longer…these men are trifling with the best interests of the country…they are traitors and secessionists at heart…their actions prove it; their speeches prove it…when their speakers get up to denounce the war and the administration prove it…I pay three thousand dollars a year in taxes. I am willing to pay six thousand…my heart cries out for the lives of our brave volunteers in the field, that these traitors at home are destroying by thousands…yes, these traitors and villains…are killing my neighbor's boys now in the field…these traitors…should be provided with hempen collars. They deserve them…". Near fine.
