A good pair of war-date Union artillery documents from Capt. R. Bruce Ricketts battery of Cemetery Hill, Gettysburg fame. Most recall that Ricketts battery was the unit that was overrun by Ewell's attacking Confederates and they used their gun's ramrod as weapons to beat back the offenders. The first document is a partly-printed, 2pp. 22" x 21", muster roll, Warrenton, Va., Oct. 31, 1863 listing the names of sixty seven members, including Capt. Ricketts, and noting whether they remain present. Entries of some note include: Pvt. James Pruyne who died in the hospital at Gettysburg of wounds sustained on July 2nd; Pvt. David Shoop who was returned to his original unit after being discovered that he deserted from the 1st Maryland Cavalry, plus three men who are identified as having gone missing during the battle of Gettysburg! A record of events show that from Oct. 6 through the 23 October, 1863 the unit marched 122 miles and that their discipline was "Good" while their appearance is "Soldiery." Signed and made official by Capt. ROBERT BRUCE RICKETTS (1839-1918) and Capt. JOHN G. HAZARD of the 1st Rhode Island Light Artillery who helped replies Pickett's Charge while commanding his artillery brigade. Also included is a manuscript, 1p. 15 1/2" x 10", being a "Report of Left Detachment" showing the amount or ammunition and horse accouterments on hand for an unknown period, but most likely ca. mid to late 1864. Interestingly, the ammo is broken down to 63 Hotchkiss case shot; 21 Shenkle case shot; 20 Shenkle canister shot and 71 Hotchkiss percussion shells. The muster roll is soiled with some archive repairs at weak folds. The detachment report is near fine
