A great Bristoe Station Campaign Union solider's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Dwight W. Stannard, Co. A, 97th New York Vols., [WIA Wilderness, Va., 5/05/64 & White Oak Swamp, Va., 6 /13/64, right arm amputated], "Headquarters 1st army Corps at Bristoe Station, Va., Oct. 28, 1863, in part: "…we have had pretty hard times the last two weeks…we was on the move…all the time. I had a horse when I wanted it, but it was so cold that I would rather walk than ride. When we was on the retreat we went within ten miles of Alexandria…orders came for us to report to Throughfare Gap that was some 26 miles and we only stayed there two days before we was ordered back to Bristoe Station…I think that the rebs are all on the other side of the Rappahannock. They tore up the railroad from Bristoe to Rappahannock so that we could not follow them…Lee made this dash…to drive us back and then he tore up the railroad and took his army somewhere else and make one or two fits and then got back hear by the time we get ready to meat him. So you can see just how the thing works. We did not have any general engagement…we had a small brush with them some seven different times but did not amount to much either time…by the time we get ready to move again the roads will be so bad that we wont move and we will halter here up till spring…Dwight W. Stannard…". VG
