A Union soldier’s letter written and signed by William A. Smith who oOn 8/21/1862 he mustered into "D" Co. PA 116th Infantry. The 4pp., letter with original cover is datelined Headquarters 1st Divs 2nd Corps, Dec 13/63. In part, “One year ago we were fighting the battle of Fredericksburg and I was dodging the balls instead of writing a letter home…” At the end of the letter he draws a picture of a ring he apparently carved.
