A Union soldier’s letter written and signed by Captain Milton B. Chamerlain who on 11/6/1861 he was commissioned into "I" Co. OH 4th Cavalry. This 5pp letter provides excellent detail, datelined head Quarters 1st Cavalry Division, Murfreesboro, Tennessee, January 6th, 1863. In part “The Cavalry had their hands full ... Eleven miles from Nashville our advance encountered the enemy ... The fight the first day was principally by cavalry ... December 31-Battle of Murfreesboro, our army had united the the evening before, a hazardous operation in such close vicinity tot he enemy ... the rebels early in the morning ... began attack. the overwhelming numbers caused McCook to give way ... the firing was just terrible. ... In the afternoon there was considerable fighting ... Col. Millikin was killed ... Wherever the fight was thickest, there was Rosecrans encouraging the troops. ... January 1st, Still confident that Rosecrans would whip Bragg today ... there was hard fighting. ... January 2nd., Battle opened early this morning ... about 2-1/2 PM a terrible fight began and was continued till dark. .. the rebel loss was very great. .. I went over the scene of the hardest part of the fighting and the enemy’s dead were thickly strewn there. ...”
