The 4pp letter on Head-Quarters 16th Army Corps” letter sheet is accompanied by an excellent Memphis cancellation cover, datelined Head Quarters 16th Army Corps, memphis, Tenn., 10th August, 1863. In part, “The magnificent steamer “Ruth” the finest boat on the river was burned to the water’s edge a few nights since near to Columbus, Ky. There were on board amongst other passengers 11 Pay Masters having in their possession $2,600,000 in “Greenbacks” to pay off the troops below here. 3 of the Pay Masters and all the money was lost about 30 passengers were lost.
