A Union soldier’s letter written and signed by Charles Eliphalet Walbridge who on 1/3/1862 he was commissioned into "H" Co. NY 100th Infantry; then 4/17/1863 he was commissioned into US Volunteers Quartermaster's Dept. and was Mustered Out on 10/7/1865. The 5pp. letter is datelined North end of Folly Island, July 17/63. In part, “Our forces have been working day and night erecting batteries mounting guns. Finally, everything is ready and tomorrow morning at daylight the attack will be made. .. we are going to attack Ft. Wagner again. Our gunboats have been dropping shells into it ever since we first landed ... We have nearly 40 pieces of ordnance in position ... 4 200lbs Parrots .. I think the chances are good of our getting Charleston. ... The Rebs have been strongly reinforced. Night before last, Gen. Terry’s forces, which were on James Island but have since been withdrawn, were attacked by 5 regiments just from Richmond. In the affair, the 54th Mass (colored) was engaged and they did well. During the affair, the Rebs opened on the pawnee with a field battery and put 51 shots into her ... one man killed. ...just think if we get Charleston! Vicksburg has fallen; Richmond at our last account was seriously threatened; Lee was up in Maryland, and now we take this accursed city! ....” The 5th page ;ist 21 soldiers “List of Casualties at Ft. Wagner.”
