A civilian widows letter written and signed by Marie Louise Mudge, on black mourning-ruled stationary. Her husband had just been killed at Gettysburg. The 2pp letter is datelined Boston, August 7, 1863. Strong content, in full, “Permit us through you to present to the noble Second Massachusetts Regiment of Infantry, a Color Staff to replace the one shattered at Chancellorsville. The bravery of the dead & living of your Command is the certain promise that the flag it is to bear will never be lost or dishonored whilst a man remains to defend it.”
