Good war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. William S. Ellsworth, Co. A, 176th New York Vols., (also 1st Louisiana Cavalry), Bayou Bluff, [Louisiana], March [actually April] 23, 1863, in part: "…we are encamped about sixty five miles above New Orleans. We have fell back seven miles. We was up to Berwick Bay. We have lots of fun shooting at the rebs. We was in a fort and had to use the cannon. We could see the rebs everyday across the river. The pickets would get to fighting them most [every] day. The 114 Regt was with in ha[lf] a mile of us…the are about one mile from us now…our living is very good. We get now and then a stray chicken…one of the Hamilton boys [possibly Curtis Holt] died yesterday. He is the first one of the boys that have died out of our Co. There is not many sick in this Co…there is about five thousand troops hear. There is three batteries hear and one of big guns…Wm. S. Ellsworth…direct to Banks Expedition, 176 Co. A N. Y. S. V...". The patriotic devise has been cut from the first page affecting very few words, since Ellsworth did not write across the verso of the devise on the second page, else VG.
